Prevention of Ultraviolet Burns

Ultraviolet burns are usually caused by overexposure to the sun. Here are some general guidelines to keep you and your family safe.

  • Wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 20 on any uncovered skin when outdoors in the sun
  • Apply sunscreen 30-60 minutes before exposure
  • Wear a brimmed hat at all times
  • Consider ultraviolet protective clothing for infants & small children
  • Reapply sunscreen frequently, as sweating and swimming will remove the sunscreen lotion

First Aid Treatment

  • Apply cool compresses to the sunburned area for 10-15 minutes at a time
  • Do not apply petroleum products
  • Gels such as Aloe may be soothing after the sunburn has been cooled
