Prevention of Contact Burns

Contact burns are generally caused by touching hot objects. Here are some general guidelines to keep you and your family safe:

  • Be aware of objects that could potentially cause injury such as a barbeque grill, fireplace, oven door, working space heaters
  • Teach your child that the fireplace, space heater, steam radiators, the oven door and stove burners are hot when they are on
  • Do not leave children unattended around hot devices
  • Do not leave hot irons unattended
  • Turn appliances off when they are not in use
  • When riding a motorcycle, wear high boots in case of accidental contact with the exhaust

First Aid Treatment

  • Flush the burn area with low-pressure, running water
  • Cover with a cool, clean, wet cloth for transport to emergency care
  • Do not apply anything such as butter, creams, petroleum jelly, toothpaste, raw vegetable (ie: tomato, cucumber), ice or sunburn products to the burn. Note that ice may cause the individual to go into shock
